When viewed from the North-west Ben Stack is a perfect cone in shape. From other directions it can be seen that it's really a long and narrow ridge. Several other mountains in Sutherland have the same sort of shape, which is a result of the geology and the action of glaciers. It's possible that during the last Ice Age Ben Stack may have been a Nunatak, a geological term for a mountain whose peak rises above the surrounding ice sheet.
